Turin offers to its visitors a circuit of great historical and architectural value: residences of the House of Savoy, Royal Palace, the official residence of Dukes of Savoy until 1865. In Turin there are also the Chiablese Palace, The Royal Museum of Armoury, the Royal Library, Carignano Palace, Villa della Regina, Valentino Palace, and Madama Palace. The later is the real metaphoric and geographic centre of the city. Certain parts of the contruction date back to the Roman age. The cathedral St. John the Baptist holds the Shroud of Turin, an old cloth bearing the ingrained track of a human body, which is believed to be the cloth Jesus was covered with in His tomb. The museum of Egyptian antiquities of the city holds the second most valuable Egyptian collection in the world, seconding the one in Cairo.
As to the outside parts of the city, it is worth visiting the castles Rivoli, Moncalieri, Venaria, Aglie, Racconigi and Govone. Some of these (most of all Rivoli, with its museum of the same name) shelter events, exhibition and cultural actions of local, and not only, interest. In 1997, this complex of historical monuments was declared UNESCO patrimony. There is the Basilica Superga on the hills surrounding the city, which offers a wonderful view to the peaks covered in snow of the Alps.
