About TAROM
TAROM, the Romanian Air Transport National Company, was established in 1954 and grew alongside the Romanian aviation. TAROM performs its activity under the authority of the Ministry of Transport. It has been a member of the SkyTeam Alliance since June 2010, of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 1993 and of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) since 2000.
More than half a century ago, the history of Romania’s Air Transport National Company started at the same time as the development of the aviation industry, a field in which Romania, through Aurel Vlaicu, Traian Vuia and Henri Coandă, became famous alongside the Unites States of America.
In 1920, one of the first commercial airlines in the world was founded in Romania, CFRNA – The French-Romanian Air Navigation Company, which was also the first airline with transcontinental flights in aviation history.
In 1926, the company was reorganized and changed its name to CIDNA – The International Air Navigation Company, then, in 1930, it changed its name again, this time to the LARES National Company – Romanian State-Used Airlines.
1945 saw another reorganization and LARES was replaced by TARS Airlines – Romanian-Soviet Air Transport, subordinated to the Romanian and soviet governments, but with a staff chosen from the people who had worked for LARES.
After yet another reorganization, LARES changed its name and became, on 18 September 1954, TAROM, Romanian Air Transport. At that time, the company’s fleet consisted of the Soviet-made planes Lisunov Li 2 and Ilyushin II – 14.
1966 – TAROM made its first flight over the Atlantic.
1969 – TAROM adds another world first in its records: The Romanian IL 18 aircraft with the TAROM logo flew for more than 50,000 kilometres around the world, in less than 80 hours of flight. The aircraft had 65 passengers on board.
In 1973 – “Long-range” aircrafts started being purchased and new transcontinental routes to New York and Beijing were opened. At that time, TAROM’s transport capacity was ten times larger than in the year of its foundation.
25 June 2010 – TAROM, Romanian Air Transport National Company became a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, a historical event marking the entry of the flag carrier in a new era of its existence.
TAROM operates flights on 43 routes in Europe and the Middle East.
