About TAROM
The Romanian National Air Transport Company TAROM was founded in 1954 and has grown along with Romanian aviation. TAROM operates under the Ministry of Transport. Since June 2010 is a member of SkyTeam Alliance, since 1993 a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and since 2000 a member of the Association of European Airlines (AEA).
With a history spanning on more than half a century, the history of Romanian National Air Transport Company begins with the development of the aviation industry, an area in which Romania – through Aurel Vlaicu, Traian Vuia and Henri Coanda – stood alongside the United States of America.
In 1920, in Romania was founded one of the first commercial airline in the world, CFRNA – Franco-Romanian Company for Air Navigation, which was, in fact, the first airline – in aviation history – with trans-continental operation.
In 1926, the company was reorganized and changed its name to CIDNA – International Company for Air Navigation, and, in 1930, changed its name again, becoming the National Society LARES – Romanian Air Lines operated by State.
1945 brings a new reorganization and LARES is replaced by Airline TARS – Romanian – Soviet Air Transport, which is subordinated to the Romanian Government and the Soviet, but whose staff were all selected from among those who had worked for LARES.
After another reorganization LARES changes its name and becomes, on September 18th, 1954 – TAROM, Romanian Air Transport. The company was, then, a fleet of Soviet production aircraft Lisunov Li 2 and Ilyushin II – 14.
1966 – TAROM made the first flight across the Atlantic.
1969 – TAROM adds a first world record: Romanian plane IL 18 branded TAROM traveled the distance of over 50.000 miles around the world in less than 80 hours of flight. The aircraft was carrying 65 passengers.
Starting with 1973 – are acquired «long haul» aircrafts and are opened new trans-continental lines in New York and Beijing. The carrying capacity of TAROM was then ten times higher than the year the company was founded.
June 25th, 2010 – National Romanian Air Transport Company TAROM is a member of SkyTeam Alliance, historical event that marks the entrance of the national company into a new era of its existence.
Today, TAROM operates flights on 43 routes in Europe and Middle East.
